Choir launches bursaries for young singers
From the Gloucestershire Gazette:The Dursley-based Tyndale Choral Society has launched a bursary scheme to support and encourage young singers.
The scheme is funded by the Bowmer Legacy, a bequest held by the Society for educational purposes, and is open to all choral singers under the age of 25.
Bass singer Morgan Chandler, aged 17, is the first to be awarded a bursary from the fund, and was welcomed to the choir by its longest-serving member, Anne Shipton.
Anne, who was this year granted Life Membership in recognition of her 60 years with the choir, said: “Choral singing was an important aspect of education when I joined the choir at the age of 15 and we want to ensure young people still have that opportunity today.
“We are especially keen to support young men in their musical ambitions, and it’s a huge pleasure to welcome Morgan to our ranks.”
The choir is currently rehearsing Hadyn’s oratorio Creation for a concert in June, and will perform Brahms’s Requiem later in the year. The bursaries on offer are for the whole 2026 season.
Tyndale’s Director of Music, Ben Sawyer, who was once Morgan’s singing coach, said: “As a choir, we feel it is important to bring the joy of singing these wonderful works to as wide a range of people as possible.
“We hope these bursaries may become a permanent part of our strategy in future years.”
